Dental Implants:  An Option to Replace Missing Teeth

If you have missing teeth, dental implants may be a viable option for replacing those teeth.  They are appropriate for a single missing tooth and multiple teeth as an alternative to fixed or removable bridges or dentures.  They are also great options for helping a loose removable partial or full dentures be more secure.

Dental implants are “artificial teeth” that replace the tooth’s root by being surgically anchored into the jawbone.  They are very stable and secure.  There is no damage to adjacent teeth or the possibility of the need for root canal therapy which can be an issue with bridgework.  There is no concern for dental decay with implants because they are made of titanium or ceramic. Implants support bone and gum health.  There is no sore gums and “click-clacking” noises that happen with dentures.  They look, feel and function much like natural teeth.

There are some things to factor in when considering implant restorations.  The process from the surgery day to the final restoration usually takes between 5-8 months.  The cost of getting implants can be more expensive than other restorative options, however the benefit of having implants should last a lifetime.  Not everyone is a candidate for implants due to medical limits, space limits, issues with the bite and function, diseases related to the bone, and anatomical limitations to name a few.  Consult with a dentist to discuss whether or not you qualify for dental implants.
